Happy National Smile Month From Your Dentist
Happy National Smile Month from all of us at Claregate Dental! As responsible dental professionals, we would like to take this time to remind you of all the ways you can better your dental health from the comfort of your own home, as well as making regular appointments with our dentist and dental hygienists.
Brushing your teeth at home
When you brush your teeth, try to do so at a 45-degree angle and brush in small circles. This scrubbing motion will work away bacteria and residual food debris from the surfaces of your teeth. Brushing your teeth hard doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll end up cleaner, because you could actually be irritating your gums and causing tooth sensitivity. If the bristles of your toothbrush are beginning to turn outwards before 3-4 months of use, then you’re probably brushing too hard and you need to soften your approach. Try brushing for at least 2 minutes, spending 1 minute on each jaw, and time this using music, a stop-watch, or even a podcast.
Don’t forget to floss!
There’s a reason your dentist and dental hygienist keep reminding you to floss – in fact, there are many reasons. Flossing helps to prevent gum disease, which can lead to gum recession and eventual tooth loss. Gum disease also causes bad breath, so flossing once a day could help you achieve fresher breath, healthier teeth, and healthier gums. Of course, your dental hygienist can also help with this as they will provide you with professional cleanings to remove stubborn plaque and tartar, the last of which can only be removed professionally and not at home.
Be aware of your diet
Certain elements of your diet could be affecting your dental health, and your dentist would like to warn you of these. Sugar, for example, has also been a big contributor to cavities and decay because the bacteria in your mouth readily feast on it. Try to cut down on sugary foods and drinks, especially sports drinks, because these have high concentrations of sugar. Alcohol is also a contributor to eroding your protective enamel, leading to tooth sensitivity, discolouration, and decay. Wine is one of the main culprits because of its high acidity. Your dentist would like to remind you to drink responsibly, and when you do indulge please have a glass of water afterward to rinse your mouth surfaces of residual acid.
